Nobu No Good!

Last night, my wife and I were privileged and honored to stand as godparents to the one-year-old son of very good friends from our church in Manila. It was a short but memorable and meaningful ceremony; from the cake to the souvenirs, from the Biblical message about parenting to the message of gratitude from the parents, it was all so well-planned and organized.

As the saying goes, though, "the best-laid plans of mice and men oft go awry," and the chink in this otherwise joyous celebration comes at the hands of the venue that my friends unfortunately chose for their son's dedication. The disastrous choice: Nobu Grill and Bar at the Blue Wave entertainment center along Macapagal Avenue. My friends reserved the entire second floor of the Nobu Grill and Bar, at Php299 a head, I assume. They had reserved for 80 guests; because of inclement weather, only around 60 arrived.

Nobu Blue Wave Macapagal is a grill and hotpot restaurant that opened July 2 at Blue Wave Macapagal. It affords diners the chance to cook four types of cuisine: Korean, Japanese, Chinese, and Brazilian BBQ. Since it's a virtually brand-new place - less than two months in operation, and there's a sign on its large display window that says it's still in "soft opening mode" - there are certain things we may have to forgive them, but in general, here is how I feel about Blue Wave's Nobu Grill Bar:
  • Food is unremarkable. We are supposed to cook the food ourselves, but given the nature of the party, we were served pre-cooked food, and the food was forgettable. From the sweetish yet overpoweringly spicy kimchi - we know kimchi, and Nobu's kimchi will rank somewhere near the bottom of our list - to the strangely tough samgyupsal, from the chewy deep fried meat - was it gizzard? chicken? pork? to date, it was still a mystery - to the disturbingly bland hotpot stew, no viand - NOT ONE! - was memorable for its flavor, taste, texture, and appearance.
  • Service was appalling. The ground floor wasn't particularly full, and the restaurant is largely self-service, so the fact that we had perhaps three waiters for our party of 60 was, in my opinion, oddly disturbing. Guess what? The entire duration of our meal, my refillable iced tea was refilled... once. The remaining four to five refills? I got up and refilled them myself from the three to four pitchers that stood ignored on a bartop counter at the far end of the room. It took a while after all pitchers were empty before waiters came to refill them.
  • Where were the grills? There was a significantly large display of fresh vegetables and seafoods waiting to be cooked on the portable grills or hotpot ovens that were in grand display on the ground floor. However, we on the second floor did not get enough grills. I counted three tables, mine among them, that did not get grills. My wife asked for one several times; none arrived. No grills, no food! I wonder what my friends did with all the leftover vegetables to which she was entitled (because they paid for them); they obviously weren't cooked that night.
  • The air-conditioning was broken. In a way, I guess it was a blessing that we didn't have grills, because it was HOT. Hot and humid because it was raining outside. My poor friends! My poor inaanak, who had to take off his adorable blue cheongsam because of the inclement weather and uncomfortable temperature!
  • It was tight. The tables were cramped so close together that it was difficult to move around. Not necessarily the fault of the restaurant, but if you know you can't comfortable seat 80 - we were only 60, what if the full 80 came? - you need to tell your clients so.
At the end of the evening, my friends had to pay the Nobu Grill & Bar Blue Wave Macapagal for the full 80 guests even if only 60 showed up. (That is fair.) However, they received far less than what they paid for. The unremarkable food, insufficient facilities, and inadequate service, mean two things: 1) I will not return, and 2) I sure as heck won't recommend Nobu Grill and Bar anytime soon to anyone who asks.

I’ve got NOBU lunch buffet vouchers from a group buying site at 50% off and made a reservation for 12 persons. When we arrived there, they did not accommodate us inside and we were told to seat outside. I wasn’t expecting that so we requested if we can just seat inside because it’s really hot outside, no fan and we have 2 babies with us. Also, there is still a vacant table & seats for 12 inside. So we’re hoping that they might be considerate seeing the two babies already sweating. But the waitress told us “BAKA PO NAUNA MAGPA-RESERVE ANG NAKA-SULAT NA NAME SA TABLE KAYA PO DITO SILA SA LOOB”. I asked her kung kelan nagpa-reserve yon kc ako I’ve made my reservation almost 2 weeks ahead but she said she don’t know. We insisted since we came there first and we also paid for that reservation. But we were told “REGULAR CUSTOMER PO KASI ANG NAKA-RESERVE DITO AT NDE PO TALAGA PWEDE KASI YON ANG SABI NG CAPTAIN”. I don’t know who the captain she’s referring to, but probably it’s the manager or owner of the restaurant. Whoever that captain is, he/she didn’t even bother to accommodate their customer properly and in a nice way. May discrimination ba because we’re not regular customers though we also paid for that buffet lunch?
So, we have no choice but to seat outside. The table was so messy, the plates and other utensils looks dirty. We started to get food from their buffet with few selections. The food was cold and parang left overs lang yung iba, we have to order drinks because the free tea they served looks and tasted like water with coloring lang. Then, we started cooking (shabu shabu) only to find out that there was a MEDIUM SIZE COCKROACH ON THE TOFU!! As in,YUUUUUCCCKKKHHHHHYYY talaga!!! We took pictures of it as proof!!! We don’t know where the cockroach came from, if it’s from the pot but it really sticks on the tofu. So it means, NOT ONLY PLACE WAS DIRTY BUT ALSO THE FOOD!!!
We requested the waitress to replace the pot and throw the food we were cooking. She didn’t even bother and just said “AH MAY IPIS PO BA?” and took the pot away without even asking for an apology. My goodness, parang normal lang sa kanila na may lumulutang or nakadikit na ipis sa food at mga gamit nila!!! The captain or manager didn’t even bother to see us to explain and say sorry…. so unprofessional.

So para nde na humaba ang complaints, we just finished our food. Though nde na kami masyado kumuha ng food thinking that all the food they served was not clean. I asked for my bill (for drinks that we ordered) and noticed that the vacant table inside with reservation for their “regular customer” was still vacant. So, they did not accommodate us inside for that reason only to find out na wala namang umupo sa vacant seats na yon!!! That’s a big shit!!!
We also noticed that the waitresses keep on taking pictures of our group. What for? Are they gonna banned us because they know we will posts our comments re their UNHYGIENIC carinderia??
Well no need for that pictures ladies, because WE WILL NOT DEFINITELY COME BACK AND DINE IN AT YOUR YUCKHY CARINDERIA AGAIN!! WE WILL NOT RECOMMEND IT EITHER!! THE WORST BUFFET CARINDERIA WE HAVE TRIED!!
To the management and owner of NOBU, ayusin nyo ang service nyo. Make sure your place and food are clean. Our experience with your carinderia was really disgusting! You’re not even that professional to accommodate customers. If you can’t do that, much better if you just close it!!! MAGSARA NA LANG KAYO!!!

OMG! this place should close down! it took us 2 months to get a reservation since they overbooked in a coupon site where i got my vouchers to this restaurant as well. I went to this Nobu bar and grill hungry thinking it was an eat all you can resto but my family and i went out even hungrier! one of my brothers didnt even touch the food!

they open at 12 nn which is already past lunch time and yet their buffet table was empty. it was already 1pm and when i asked when they will refill the food, they simply answered, "we will refill the food, niluluto lng po" it was already 2pm and yet they only served rice and steamed siomai that was full of extenders and fats. all other foods were dirty and inedible.

When we entered, the place was hot, the aircon was broken, there were a lot of flies on the food. The food werent fresh, the seafoods were frozen and even stale. also the tofu. all they had were vegetables. there were no bars nor grills!

a carinderia serves better food than this!

the waiters situated our table in the middle where it is very tight and inconvinient and we couldnt even pass to get some food. i even had to walk on chairs just to get our. when we requested to be transfered to 2 smaller tables. they kept on saying that the other tables were reserved but until we left no other new customers went in.

The place was dirty and the food was horrible. it is the worst place to eat. we couldnt eat the food at all as they are way too dirty. One of our guests even had diarhea! The rattan chairs even had bed bugs that bit my legs. i have never regretted eating in a certain restaurant until we ate here.

This place should close down! if you purchased any groupon or voucher, consider giving it to other people or else you'll just waste your time and money and gas.

WORST RESTAURANT I'VE EVER BEEN TO!!! YOU OBVIOUSLY CHANGED YOUR MENU, PROBABLY BECAUSE YOU MADE DEALS WITH ENSOGO ET AL, AND THE RESULT WAS A DISASTER... YOU SOLD VOUCHERS THROUGH THOSE SITES FOR HALF THE PRICE OF YOUR USUAL LUNCH BUFFET RATE, BUT THE QUALITY OF THE FOOD YOU SERVE WAS COMPROMISED IN A HUGE WAY!!! I WAS EXPECTING THAT YOU WILL OFFER ITEMS TO BE GRILLED, AS YOUR NAME SUGGESTS, APART FROM THE VERY BLAND "SHABU-SHABU" (OR SO YOU CALL IT, BECAUSE IT SURELY DOESN'T COMPARE, NOT AT LEAST A BIT, TO THE MANY SHABU-SHABU RESTOS I'VE BEEN TO...) BUT THERE WAS NOT A SINGLE ITEM FOR GRILLING...

YOU REGARD YOUR BUSINESS AS A RESTAURANT SERVING KOREAN, JAPANESE AND CHINESE FOOD, BUT HOW COME THERE WAS VERY LITTLE SELECTION? (AND I DON'T EXAGGERATE WHEN I SAY VERY LITTLE... I'M SURE MANY CUSTOMERS CAN ATTEST TO THAT..) NOT A SINGLE JAPANESE FOOD (NO MAKI OR SUSHI OF ANY KIND) THERE WAS CHAP-CHAE AND KOREAN BEEF (SO I GUESS THAT WILL MAKE FOR THE KOREAN FOOD CATEGORY), THERE WAS ALSO SIOMAI (AND THAT'S IT FOR THE CHINESE FOOD CATEGORY, LOLS...)

WE'D RATHER PAY FOR OUR DRINKS, INSTEAD OF ENDURING THAT FREE WATER-TASTING ICED TEA THAT YOU CALL, SO WE ORDERED PINEAPPLE JUICE... BUT AGAIN, TO OUR GREAT DISMAY, INSTEAD OF SERVING US PINEAPPLE JUICE IN CAN, YOU OPTED FOR A BADLY MIXED POWDER JUICE DRINK... AND THE WAITRESS HANDED ME THE STRAW IN HER BARE HANDS... (EVEN THE SERVICE CREW FROM JOLLIBEE WOULD HAND YOU A STRAW WITH A NAPKIN, HOW HARD IS IT TO DO THE SAME???)

SO TO SUMMARIZE THIS REVIEW....

FOOD WAS BAD..
SERVICE WAS BAD...
DEFINITELY NOT COMING BACK!!!
